The Old Town. After the ravages of war the district was rebuilt with such care and attention to details that UNESCO decided to place it on its List of Cultural and Natural Heritage.

The Royal Route runs from the Royal Castle through Krakowskie Przedmieście, Nowy Świat and Aleje Ujazdowskie. Beautiful palaces, churches, mansion houses, statues and parks are located along the route. The most beautiful of the parks - Łazienki - the summer residence of the last Polish king - Stanisław August Poniatowski - is the favourite place for walks of the inhabitants of Warsaw as well as tourists.

On Sundays from May until October concerts of Chopin's music take place by the Chopin's monument in the beautiful scenery of Łazienki Park. The Royal Route ends on the outskirts of the city, in Wilanów - another wonderful former residence of one of the Polish kings - Jan III Sobieski. This pearl of baroque architecture provides another splendid backdrop for classical music performances. One should not forget the other attractions of the city.

Warsaw is much more than just a collection of historical monuments. It is also the cultural capital of the country. There are over fifty museums here and over fifty galleries, as well as over thirty professional theatres. Owing to the important role of the National Philharmonic, Warsaw is the main music centre of the country. Many international festivals and competitions take place here every year, such as the renowned Fryderyk Chopin International Piano Competition, the "Warsaw Autumn" International Modern Music Festival, International "Jazz Jamboree" Jazz Festival and the Warsaw Summer Jazz Days.

Warsaw is well prepared to receive its guests. The network of information points and a unified sign system make getting around the city easy.

Views:

  • The tower of St. Anna's Church, view of the Old Town on the right bank (open only in summer).
  • Palace of Culture and Science (Pałac Kultury i Nauki), panorama of Warsaw from the 30th floor.

Places of interest....

Kolumna Zygmunta (The Sigismund's Column) -the most well-known of all Warsaw monuments, commemorating the king who moved the capital from Cracow to Warsaw.

Castle Square presided over by the Royal Castle. The Castle is an element of the reconstructed Old Town and due to its significance it has been entered in the list of the World Cultural Heritage of UNESCO.

Of particular interest is The St. John's Cathedral in Świętojańska Street. Its history goes back to the beginning of the 14th century. Here Polish kings were crowned, here the 3rd May Constitution was sworn. Tombs of Mazovian princes, bishops, well-known Poles and the last Polish king, Stanisław August Poniatowski, can be seen in the catacombs. Concerts of the International Organ Music Festival are held in the Cathedral.
