Szczecin is one of the most frequently visited Polish cities, and, especially foreigner visitors most often chose to come and see it.

The city is situated in the north-west corner of Poland on the both banks of the lower Odra River, approximately 65 km from the Baltic Sea. For centuries, this place has been the junction for many transit overland routes, railways, and waterways connecting the west with the east, and the north with the south of Europe. The early days of the city date back to the second half of the 8th century, when, on top of the present Wzgórze Zamkowe Hill upon the Odra River, a Slavic hamlet was established. In the next century, it was transformed into a stronghold surrounded by an earthen rampart and a moat. In the 10th century, at the foot of the hill, on the Odra River bank, a Slavic settlement was established outside the stronghold walls. And this was the beginning of a buoyantly developing municipality. Western settlers began to settle here from the middle of the 12th century.

A medieval municipality was granted autonomy by the Duke Barnim and his Act of Location in 1243. The town started to build ramparts with numerous towers and defensive gates.
Right from the start, a seaport and river port were the key factors enhancing the economic and social development of the city.

The history of the Griffin duchy and its reign in the Pomerania started at the beginning of the 12th century; the first written trace refers to the duke Warcislaw I who gave birth to this family. The Griffin family ruled the duchy over a period of more than 500 years; this period was full of many turbulent events. The dynasty reigns ended in 1637, when the last duke from this family, Boguslaw XIV, died heirless.

In 1630, the city fell into Swedish hands, and in 1720 was officially bought back by the Prussian King Frederick Wilhelm I.
In 1945 Szczecin came again under the Polish authority and took up its position as prosperous seaport and river port.
The well preserved Gothic monuments are witnesses of the turbulent history of the city:

  • St. Peter's and St. Paul's Church from the 14th/15th centuries;
  • Cathedral of St. Jacob from the 14th/15th centuries, presently, it is aan archdiocese basilica;
  • Church of St. John the Evangelist from the 14th century, built by Grey Friars.

The only remnant of the medieval fortifications is The Maiden's Tower, also known as the Tower of Seven Coats; for the first time in the history, it was mentioned in 1307.
The symbol of Szczecin, a Renaissance Castle of the Dukes of Pomerania from the 16th and 17th centuries, destroyed during World War II, was painstakingly reconstructed, including its Mint (Museum) wing originated by the duke Phillip II and ended by the duke Francis.
A Loitz House was constructed by a banker family in 1547; it was also destroyed during World War II, and reconstructed after the war. Now, it hosts a Secondary School of Fine Arts.
The Port (Harbour) Gate with its richly ornamented tops dates back to the beginning of the Prussian reign (18th century), as does the King's Gate.

The most chic and eye-catching place in Szczecin are Wały Chrobrego (the Chrobry Banks/Ramparts); the residents of Szczecin, as well as Polish and foreign tourists love to go for a walk along them, especially as lots of cultural and entertaining events are very often organized in this area. Additionally, during the summer, ship cruises are available across the Szczecin seaport, the Dąbie Lake and the Odra River Delta.

All the tourists who want to more profoundly get to know the historical monuments of Szczecin, are welcome to follow the so called City Tourist Route marked with a red dashed line. The almost 6.5 km long tourist trail starts in the Railway Station, comprises the most interesting sites and monuments in the Old Town, and ends in the same Railway Station. Maps with the Red Route marked, as well as its full description (in Polish, English, or German) are available in many Tourist Offices in Szczecin.

Nature lovers are encouraged to visit the Kasprowicz Park with its picturesque sceneries, unique species of exotic trees and bushes, and a rich world of bird species livinh around the Rusałka Jezioro (the Water-Nymph Pond). In the Park, there is a monument 'Pomnik Czynu Polaków' (Monument to the Actions of Polish Generations) unveiled in 1979. Children will love to ride a horse or enjoy a trip by a small railway train around the open area called Jasne Błonia.

Tourists are also encouraged to visit a Central Cemetery, one of the largest cemeteries in Europe. It is rather a municipal green park than a burial ground and resting place. Alongside many post-wartime graves, there are well preserved head- and tombstones from the pre-war periods.The Emerald Lake in Szczecin-Zdroje is one of the attractions recommended to see. It is a former limestone excavation hollow filled up with water in the 1920s. From Szczecin-Zdroje, it is worth to continue the walk to the scenic golf field at Binów.There are numerous bathing beaches and swimming pools in Szczecin, such as: "Głębokie", "Arkonka", "Gontynka", "Dziewoklicz", and "Dąbskie"; they all invite tourists during hot days.

Several marinas are located on the coast of the Dąbskie Lake. Yacht cruises are organized across the Lake or across the Szczecin Bay. Open-sea and off-shore sailing cruises start from here, too; they have been organized by the experienced and reliable sailors from Szczecin for many years. From the port at Dziewoklicz, there are organized canoe trips heading the International Park in the Lower Odra River Valley. Motorized tourists are invited to visit the Dendrological Garden in Glinne, and on their way, to see the remnants of the Cistercian Abbey at Kołbacz: the Romanesque-Gothic Church, Gothic House of Abbot, a House of Lay Brothers and Sisters (Converses) with a medieval oven/stove, and some other monastery farm buildings. The ornithological reserve 'Świdwie' is a unique reserve on the world scale; it accommodates habitats of bird species facing extinction, and, as such, has joint the RAMSAR International Convention on Wetlands.
The Tourist Information Office (Centrum Informacji Turystycznej) provides you with all the necessary information on how to interestingly spend time in Szczecin.

THE LARGEST POLISH CITY in the north-west corner of Poland, close to three countries: Germany, Denmark, Sweden, and the third largest city in Poland with regard to its total area.

THE CAPITAL of the former Griffin dynasty, and now, of the Western Pomeranian Province & 'Pomerania' Euroregion; it is also an administrative, economic, cultural, scientific, and tourist centre of the entire region.

THE CITY FOR YOUTH. Over 70 thousand students study at 19 universities and colleges. Every year several thousand graduates from either state-owned or private higher education institutions join the labour market in this part of Europe; all of the them are well educated, strong-minded, and success-aimed.

THE CITY OF FREEDOM. While fighting against totalitarianism, Szczecin residents significantly impacted the present shape of the united Europe.

THE GATE OF THE BALTIC. Szczecin residents have been connected with the maritime economy for generations since the city is just 65 km away from the Baltic Sea.

THE CITY ON WATER. Attractive water reservoirs cover one-fourth of the entire city area. Excellent conditions for water sports attract every tourist.

THE CITY OF GREENERY. Within the municipal borders of Szczecin, there are 3 forests and 15 parks. And around the city, woods stretch for many kilometres.

THE CITY OF RADIAL-SHAPED SQUARES. The architectural designs of squares in Szczecin and Paris are related; they are in a radial pattern. We encourage you to visit the stunning places of interests, such as: the Chrobry Banks (Wały Chrobrego) along the Odra River, the Renaissance Castle of the Pomeranian Dukes of the 14th century, the reconstructed Old City with the Gothic Town Hall, two Baroque Gates of Szczecin (The Harbour Gate and the Royal Gate).

THE CITY OF INTERNATIONAL EVENTS. For many years already, the City has been hosting numerous annual events and festivities (including friendship picnics and fairs) known in Poland and throughout the world. In particular, we invite you to come and enjoy the Sea Festival, International Table-Tennis Tournament "Pekao Open", as well as "The Tall Ships' Races 2007".
